For most of my life I carried around a disappointed young man.

He wasn’t real, obviously.

If he had been, I’d have charged him rent.

But he was always there nonetheless, sitting somewhere in the back of my mind with his arms folded and his eyebrows raised, looking at the life I was building and asking whether this was really the best I could do.
