Something for the weekend

Welcome aboard for an episode about the strange, unglamorous art of being useful when nobody is clapping. We start with three nautical words that should be sold in pharmacies: wake, the proof you were moving; ballast, the unseen weight that keeps you upright; and squall, the meteorological equivalent of a bad morning that arrives with theatre and leaves with damp socks.

From there we climb to the bridge for what captains rarely confess in public. The emergencies are not the job. The job is the twenty three empty hours in between, when you are structurally unnecessary, quietly on watch, and judged on nothing but the state you keep yourself in.

There is also a peculiar bit of ocean folklore, te lapa, the flashing light some Pacific navigators swear can point to land in the dark. Nobody has confirmed it to everyone’s satisfaction, which is a lovely standard for people who are very rarely at sea and almost never lost.

If you have ever been competent in private, stubborn in peace, or calm for no audience whatsoever, this one is for you.

A ship leaves a wake that can be seen long after the vessel itself has gone. People do the same, only with less salt spray and more paperwork.

In this episode we talk about the things carried low and out of sight, the ballast nobody thanks you for, and the short violent squalls that drench your morning without changing the world. We visit the bridge at four a.m. to discuss the truth behind command: most of it is readiness, not drama, and the real skill is doing nothing correctly for hours at a time.

Along the way there is a stubborn line from the comments section, a half believed navigational phenomenon called te lapa, and a gentle case for ageing: you stop performing competence and start inhabiting it.

One warning. There is a sentence in here that may cause involuntary tea ejection.

Leave the phone face down. Stay sharp anyway. The horizon does not send reminders.
